It is an obsession that revolves around a piquant love triangle between the Berlin musician Miriam Auerbach (Heike Makatsch), the French doctor Pierre Moulin (Charles Berling) and the English craftsman John MacHale (Daniel Craig). In this film, the three protagonists are offered by the critics. At least Heike Makatsch and Daniel Craig do not play a big role. In fact, the two know each other and love each other during the shooting of Obsession. Heike Makatsch even moves with Daniel Craig to London and from there her acting career in Germany is alive and well. Their relationship ends in 2004, then Heike Makatsch moves to Berlin. In 1998, Daniel Craig was allowed to participate in the history film Elizabeth (with Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush), but in a very ignoble role, that of John Ballard, the conspiracy wire puller against Queen Elizabeth I. After the history film, Daniel Craig continued to make films, but the real international highlights are very rare and in this country he is only known as the man next to Heike Makatsch. The first real international eye-catcher was Daniel Craig in 2001, when he impersonated the somewhat shady friend Alex West of Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) in Lara Croft "Tomb Raider". No less shady, but for that, Daniel Craig's role as the son of a mob boss in the gangster revenge drama Road to Perdition (2002; starring Paul Newman, Tom Hanks and Jude Law) is even more important.

The highlight of these years, however, is director Steven Spielberg's terrorist thriller (2005; starring Eric Bana and Geoffrey Rush), which is loosely based on the deadly hostage-taking of Israeli athletes by a "Black September" terrorist group at the 1972 Olympic Games. Daniel Craig mimes an agent for the first time, but of the Israeli secret service Mossad. After the James Bond movie, no one doubts the competence of Daniel Craig in 007 anymore. After all, Casino Royale with the Bond girl Eva Green, the villain Mads Mikkelsen and the head of MI6 Judi Dench, has earned almost 600 million US dollars worldwide. In 2008 followed the tough but eventful Casino Royale sequel Ein Quantum Trost (starring Mathieu Amalric, Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton), directed by German director Marc Forster, but very mixed among the fan community. After his grueling mission against Spectre, Daniel Craig almost wants to give up his license to kill. Bond fans can breathe a sigh of relief, however, because Daniel Craig will definitely shoot another mission in 007. Its release has been scheduled for April 2020.

Daniel Craig in the cinema without a license to kill

Daniel Craig identifies with the fictional character James Bond. Only one thing can help: good films away from the world of 007. Among these works is the fantasy film "The Golden Compass" (2007; with Nicole Kidman, Sam Elliott and Eva Green). The Golden Compass, the first part of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" fantasy trilogy, is critically acclaimed as the best fantasy film since "The Lord of the Rings" and even comes from the same production company, New Line Cinema. But at the U.S. box office, the $180 million production fell off the charts, earning only $70 million. The Golden Compass outside of North America won $ 300 million, it still wins the production of the other two parts of the novel trilogy away. After James Bond 007 - A Quantum of Solace in 2008, Daniel Craig plays the lead role in the war action drama Defiance.
